Photos: Lost 40

On our journey up north we made a stop at the Lost 40 Scientific and Natural Area, a fascinating plot of land in the middle of nowhere with a unique history. When initial surveys were done the area was overlooked through a series of errors that can easily happen in the era before aerial mapping tools and modern communication tools. That meant that the area was not logged during the logging boom, and contains some of the oldest trees in Minnesota. It’s incredible to see red and white pines towering higher than I’ve ever seen them before. It’s still not the type of trees you’d find in the pacific northwest, but given our short growing season, it’s very impressive.

Enjoy this album of a few shots along the hiking trail within the Lost 40!
