Tomorrow is supposedly the most romantic day of the year, with couples everywhere celebrating their love with dinner, movies and assorted gifts. I’ve had my ups and downs when it comes to Valentine’s Day. In my first marriage we did some fun group dates a few years, but mostly it was just a night to go out to dinner at a decent place and buy a little bit of chocolate. Then for many years I was single and Valentine’s was a slightly depressing day.
Now that I’ve been with Lisa for a few years, we haven’t really done much special for Valentine’s. Our first V-day together was a trip to Duluth, and last year my only Facebook comment was about how she kicked my butt in a weight training session. As I assume many people feel, it can be weird to have a single day devoted to showing the person that you love that… you love them. I hope that if people truly love the person that they’re with that they chose every day to tell them that they matter and they care about them and that their lives are made better by their presence. Of course excuses for chocolate and dinner aren’t always a bad thing :).
For year we’re going to mark the day with a slightly different activity. We’re doing a fun 5K run put on by Twin Cities in Motion, the folks that put on the Twin Cities Marathon. It’s going to be a cold one though. The temps are going to be in the negative numbers, although it should be nice and sunny. Thankfully this is more of a fun run at this point in our training plans, so we don’t need to worry about running it super hard. We still need to decide if we’re running it together or at our own paces.
Tomorrow’s blog will probably be a quick race report, and maybe a pic of us freezing our butts off.
