Paying it forward

So this morning I got a ping on Twitter that another blogger had nominated me for a Liebster Award. At first I thought, “Huh? What the heck is this, some kind of spam?” I then went to the site of the person who nominated me and found that in fact it’s one of those games where you answer questions, and then nominate another group of people and challenge them to answer questions. I’ve seen these going around Facebook plenty of times, and usually don’t participate, but this whole deal seems a lot more suited to a blog-o-sphere where you can take more time to be thoughtful and creative in your answers. So without further delay here’s my creation for the day, my Liebster Award response.

First, a huge thanks to Tiffany and her blog daily dose of reality for the nomination. I usually don’t have a good sense of how many people, or if anyone at all, is reading this stuff, so it’s fun to get a little bit of interaction sometimes. So thanks again to Tiffany and go check out her blog.

Second, here are the rules:

  1.  Thank and link the person who nominated you.
  2.  Answer the questions given by the nominator.
  3.  Nominate 7 other bloggers, who have less than 200 followers and link them (guessing on the followers…).
  4.  Create 7 new questions for the nominees to answer.
  5.  Notify all nominees via social media/blogs.
  6. Celebrate this achievement.
  7. Stay motivated and keep blogging.

Third, here are my nominees:

  • She Runs This Life – Written by someone very special to me about her fitness journey. Great motivation.
  • Painfully Hopeful – Great blog by a friend of mine who shares a ton of cool stuff on technology, history, culture and religion.
  • Blissful Britt – Fun stuff, and today there’s a picture of a cute puppy, so how could I not link to her.
  • Happy & Full – She started homebrewing recently, which is awesome.
  • Nearly Shoeless – This guy is nuts. Mountain Ultras are crazy, but cool.
  • The Least Read Blog on the Web – From a friend and acclaimed author John Otte. Great stuff on here if you’re into geeky things.
  • Inside My Head – My buddy hasn’t blogged in a while so tagging him to kick his butt a little bit.

Next, here are the seven questions for them to answer:

  1. Name one song that has touched your life and why.
  2. What hobby/interest do you wish you had more time for?
  3. What is your most favorite photograph you’ve ever taken?
  4. What is a fitness/sport goal that you’re the most proud of, or what fitness/sport goal do you want to achieve?
  5. What is your favorite beer or alcoholic beverage?
  6. Of all the cars you’ve owned, which one if your favorite and why?
  7. What piece of technology are you most thankful for, and couldn’t live without?

And finally, here are the questions that I need to answer:

  1. Name one book, song, or piece of art that has touched your life and why.
    1. Despite having advanced degrees in theology, I’m not going to say The Bible here. Instead I’m going to say The Lord of the Rings books, as they opened up such an amazing fantasy world for me that I still get a bit teary eyed when the score Concerning Hobbits plays in the first movie.
  2. How do you feel about blogging? Name at least one thing you love and one thing you hate (be honest, we all have these feelings now and then).
    1. In general like blogging, otherwise I wouldn’t have embarked on this one-a-day journey this year. However, one thing I hate is when I accidentally don’t proofread close enough and I end up with typos that make me look dumb. I’m sure this post will have a couple as well! LOL.
  3. What hobby/interest do you wish you had more time for?
    1. I wish that I had more time for photography. I used to take more time for it, but with all the other things in my life I don’t have the discipline and time available to go out and shoot interesting things as often as I like.
  4. Who has influenced you the most and how?
    1. At this point in my life I have to say that my wife has been the biggest influence on my life. She has been a huge influence on me to make me a better person, father and husband. Her patience and perseverance with me is astounding, especially considering she doesn’t drink!
  5. What is your biggest weakness, how do you overcome it?
    1. Probably motivation. I have tons of great ideas and they often never get done. One of the things I’ve done to correct that this year is this Create-a-Thon that I’m doing.
  6. Where and when do you feel most creative?
    1. Along the shore of Lake Superior. I love sitting by the water and listening to the waves. I often feel inspired and creative when I’m there and love traveling up and down the North Shore.
  7. When do feel most accomplished and why?
    1. When I finish a blog each day? Seriously though, when my interactions with my kids are good, and I see them growing into capably mini-adults, makes me feel the most accomplished.

So there ya go. Would love to see the people on my list participate. In closing here’s a shot from Red Wing, MN and the Mississippi River.
