Titansgrave: The Ashes of Valkana

I’m a fan of Wil Wheaton, and especially his TableTop show where they play board games and generally have a good time. You wouldn’t think that watching people play games could be entertaining, but with some witty banter, and fun personalities, it’s a great show to watch and learn about games you maybe have never played.

This past year they did a Indiegogo campaign to raise money for the third season of TableTop, and the gimmick was that if they raised enough money beyond the base goal they’d do a second show based on an RPG game. I contributed to the campaign, and was delighted to find out that the RPG show was going to become a reality. Fast forward quite a few months, and Titansgrave: The Ashes of Valkana is live with new episodes releasing each week.

My wife and I are LOVING this show. This isn’t just a play-through of some D&D adventure. This is a completely new world, developed specifically for the show. It’s a beautiful blending of technology and magic, set in a dystopian-esque time where multiple races must learn to work together to survive. The artwork that they’ve generated for the show is amazing and beautiful and compliments the story brilliantly.

The players have no idea what to expect next, and every week more and more of this rich world is revealed. Mr. Wheaton does an amazing job as the game master, weaving an engaging tale and letting the players dictate the future based upon their own whims and motivations. There have even been emotional and stirring moments when characters encounter tragedies that motivate them in-game and even affect the group in real life. I occasionally do a little GM’ing and this show is an example to everyone on how to do it right.

I can’t recommend this show enough if you’re someone who’s enjoyed RPG games, and loves watching a rich story unfold. Go check it out starting with episode zero and then catch up with all of us as we follow this stalwart band of misfits on their journey of discovery.
