This weekend we picked up the new version of the Ghostbusters movie. As a kid I loved the original Ghostbusters movie, and despite all of the hype that people were complaining about a female version of the team, I was still interested in seeing the movie. I’ll keep this review spoiler free, but in general if you’ve seen the original, you’re not going to have a hard time figuring out the basic plot.

That may be my only real complaint about the film is that the basic premise of the plot wasn’t that different from the original. At just about every plot twist I was able to predict what was going to happen. However, that really didn’t stop my enjoyment of the film. Even though I knew what was coming, the dynamic between the characters was so well done, I didn’t really care that the plot was a re-hash.

That character dynamic was easily the best part of the movie, and the casting turned out to be really well done. I’m often not a fan of Melissa McCarthy, as she gets typecast as a stereotypical, prat-falling fat woman. Her wit is often overshadowed by physical jokes that get old to me. However, in Ghostbusters her physical comedy took a back seat to her witty banter and it was really, really enjoyable.

The interplay between the four women worked really well, and there were moments where I thought that they were actually cracking each other up. In particular I really liked Kate McKinnon’s Holtzmann character, and her crazy, gadgety hijinks. Her frenetic rants about her latest inventions were hilarious and well delivered. Her performance really shone as one of the standouts in the movie.

The new Ghostbusters movie is a really enjoyable flick, and it’s well worth the time. It’s a great homage to the original, and hopefully if they make a sequel they can spend more time branching out into new storylines.
