A while ago I talked about my dilemma around getting a bike computer, or investing in a multisport watch. I ended up getting an inexpensive bike computer to tie me over till I could make the choice I wanted to. However, with my first 50 mile race coming up in April, I needed to figure out how I was going to squeeze 14 hours of battery life out of my Garmin 220.
I had a few options that I considered. First, I thought about just using my bike computer as a second watch and then combining the GPX files. However, when I took my bike computer out on a run with me, it’s performance was abysmal. It’s obviously tuned to a different movement profile, and not slow running. I also thought about borrowing a watch from someone, but that can also be a pain to work with, since I’d need to bring a computer with me to get the files off.
Finally, I decided that maybe it was time to bite the bullet and get a multisport watch with better battery life. Wednesday, my new Garmin 920XT arrived, and I can’t wait to take it out for a spin on Thursday morning. The watch arrived just in time for my big 31 mile training run this weekend.
I want to talk a bit about why I chose this watch, instead of other models, but I’ll save it for another post, after I’ve spent more time using it.
